Young Blood

By Gerry Mulligan

Jazz ensemble (5-5-5-4) - Grade 4-5
Composed by Gerry Mulligan. Arranged by Gerry Mulligan. The Stan Kenton Orchestra Library Series. Swing. Score and set of parts. Published by Sierra Music (S1.SMP-657).

Item Number: S1.SMP-657

Mulligan's writing for the Kenton Band was fairly minimal in quantity but extraordinary in quality. He had a profound effect on the band and the writers to follow him. This composition was recorded in 1952 and is on the New Concepts CD (available from Sierra Music). There is solo space for alto, tenor and trumpet. A classic which should be in every jazz library. 5-5-5-4 (This music is available from Mosaic Records in their Russo/Holman CD set.).

Young BLood begins with a unison saxophone line, which is quickly built upon by the brass. There are solo's for alto, tenor, and trumpet in the piece. It is by no means easy. Young Blood is a hard swinging piece with a buildup to a tremendous sock section at...

the end. Its a great tune for competition or to challenge any big band.
