Written in the K'au District on the Island of Hawai'i, this piece for flute trio captures the sound of the wind rising in the distance off the ocean and whispering through the old growth, ohia trees. There is a gentle 'whoosh' as the wind brushes past your ears. A careful listener will hear that wind from old Hawai'i. Written in 2007, "Windweaver" has become a favorite of flutists and audiences at the Alaska Flute Studies Center in Anchorage, Alaska. 6:00 minutes (ASCAP)
Composer Notes on "Windweaver":I've written this piece with texture that in places thins to one flute then thickens again to all three flutes. This gives the effect of the rising and falling of the gentle wind. In addition, there is subtle dissonance written into the fourth beat of some measures. This creates the effect of the wind brushing past your ears. In performance I often suggest members audience brush the palm of their hand past their ear, then listen for this effect in the piece as it's performed. People have been delighted to tell me that they actually heard the wind in the music! I hope you enjoy "Windweaver.".

    Difficulty Level:
  • June 16, 2021 Interesting, but not for me

This is a pretty and unusual piece. Each part has long rests and lots of changes in counting and key signatures. It was challenging with some interesting harmonies. It is not a piece I’d like to play over and over. If you like experimental music, you may like it...

. We may give it another try but for me it was not money well spent.

    Difficulty Level:
  • October 20, 2016 Wonderful Flute Trio!

This trio is beautiful and evocative. It captivates your audience and is incredibly fun to play! All three parts are rather equal in terms of difficulty and each plays through melody, support melody, and a pulsating rhythmic pattern. This is a crowd-pleaser that you'll want to play over...

    and over!
