  • May 07, 2016 A Hit At Solo/Ensemble Contest

I ordered this mainly as a piece to help young high school brass players learn how to read and interpret swing rhythms. It quickly became one of the favorites of my brass quintet. In late April we performed this as the second of two pieces at the Kentucky Music Educators...

Association solo/ensemble contest, and the judge afterward commented on how much he enjoyed it. It is now thought of by my kids as our "signature selection." We scored distinguished ratings on both pieces. This selection is very well arranged by Thomas Graf and is scored to feature every performer in the group in a solo capacity. It is a piece I heartily recommend for directors of young brass quintets who are looking to expand their ensemble's versatility and learning experience. Thomas Graf is a prolific writer, arranger, and performer whose work spans all genres of music. Check out his work!

    Difficulty Level:
  • May 16, 2015 Introduction to Swing Rhythms

I work with a brass quintet I formed at the local high school, and one of the things my kids struggle with is reading and interpreting swing rhythms. I have tried different ways to get them used to them, including playing scales in swing. When it comes to actually playing...

them in the setting of an actual piece, they are still struggling. I was looking for something for them that would be within their skill level that would still be challenging enough to be instructive, and after listening to the sound clip, I knew I had found what I was looking for! This is a straight ahead arrangement that falls within the range of my players. The solos parts are written out and sound great! The arrangement is also good enough for more advanced level quintets to play during a program. I definitely recommend it!
