The Italian town of Lucca was the birthplace of one of opera's most famouscomposers, Giacomo Puccini. However, this creator of Madame Butterfly andTosca wasin fact the fifth generation of composers in the Puccini family. This musical family treeincluded Giacomo Puccini senior (greatgreatgrandfather of the opera composer),Antonio Puccini (greatgrandfather), Domenico Puccini (grandfather) and MichelePuccini (father). Each of these composers was concerned primarily with creating sacredworks for religious worship in Lucca.

He served as organist at the church ofSan Martino as well as director of the Cappella Palatina. In 1743, Puccini became amember of the Bologna Accademia Filarmonica. His sacred works alternatecounterpoint with homophonic texture, and demonstrate striking harmonic changes toillustrate the text.
