  • January 23, 2017 Masterpiece, but this is not a legitimate edition

The Durand edition of the Ravel Trio is the first edition. It is very pricey, but it is probably worth the expense. This edition is simply a photocopy of the Durand with some sort of small change introduced on each page to avoid copyright violation. These changes make the score...

both inaccurate and harder to read than the piece already is.This piece is absolutely gorgeous, and it is a cornerstone of the repertoire. Unfortunately, Ravel decided to notate the accidentals in an extremely obtuse manner. For example, he often spells a B major chord in the piano part with an Eb, and in one spot a D minor chord in the right hand is spelled "E#, A, Cx, E#". It is a very technically challenging piece, be prepared to spend extra weeks or months sorting out the notes before you can play it comfortably.
