Toch's book is possibly the clearest explanation of the deep processes of composition (written for musicians). The book explores the intangible areas of composition rather than concentrating on specific technical devices. For Toch, the soul of composition lies both in carrying through one's horizontal lines to their logical...

conclusion and in allowing the large-scale structures of one's pieces to be dictated by the needs of the music (rather than making the music subservient to a rigid form). Using short examples from Bach to Schoenberg, he makes his points with both clarity and passion. I found this work quite inspirational.
