As well as Tchaikovsky's famous Piano Concerto, his extensive oeuvre for solo piano also makes an important contribution to romantic piano music. It includes "The Seasons" op. 37 - pleasant playable pieces that reflect a bygone bourgeois atmosphere and can therefore be assigned to the category of "domestic music." These twelve intimate mood-pictures enable the pianist to plot the course of the twelve months of the year. No. 11, "Troika", displays a Russian character particularly well, when in November the sleigh bells and the cheerful singing of the passengers create an enchanting sound. Our edition is based on the autograph and the Russian first edition; moreover it contains Klaus Schilde's highly regarded fingerings.

    I recently heard two of the months from this suite on NPR and thought they were charming. I decided I would like to play them and am very glad I bought them. They are fun to sight read and then to perfect for great additions to a program.

    About the edition : The Henle edition is probably the best one existing. It is so much more interesting to know what's behind the music, to feel the music, to understand it. There is so much information in this edition of the Seasons, not just a mere introduction. The history...

    , the composition, the preface, the commentary... About the music : Tchaikovsky's magic again ! The Seasons are such beautiful pieces. For example, in "January", one could really imagine sitting on the fireside in winter, or in "September", one could feel it's the hunting season. They're all so inventive, and really nice to play and to listen. Some are easier, others are more difficult, but everyone can try for it's really worth it and because it's a wonderful part in one's "répertoire musical".
