  • February 27, 2019 simple but subtle

At first glance, this graceful and polished arrrangement was not a barrier to my no-audition, community college choir. But it is difficult to make it sound good; there are lots of vowels on long notes, lots of phrases where one must not breathe, and an absolute necessity of producing...

blend. It takes work to make the piece sound good--but it's worth it.

  • November 07, 2012 Lovely piece

I agree with all of the previous reviewers - this is a lovely piece to sing, uplifting, contemplative without becoming maudlin, staid and dignified without being slow or dragging. I sang this is college in the early 80's and have hummed it often since. Just recently I ordered this piece...

to sing at my 50th birthday party with my choir friends. I'm looking forward to it.

  • October 22, 2012 A beatiful, reflective piece

This piece has become a classic. If you are looking for a toe tapping, high spirited number, this is NOT it.If you want an anthem that is reflective and refreshing, this IS it. Great piece for communion (about 6 minutes long). Most of the music is simple except for...

the evolving ending. The difficulty in the main work is having each section sound like one voice with proper accents and diminuendos. When I hear Randall Thompson, I think of his Alleluia piece. This would be the second piece to remember. Not cheap, but worth the price.

  • August 18, 2005 Robert Frost would be proud

When I was in high school, this was my favorite arrangement. I first performed this piece at All-State chorus in Greensboro, NC. Years later, it still remains to be my favorite because the harmony and dynamics fit so well with the meaning of the poem. Robert Frost would be...

proud to have his poem put to such a wonderful use.

  • July 12, 2005 perfect setting for the poem

This is a lovely piece. Randall Thompson, quintessential American composer, was commissioned to write Frostiana for the 200th anniversary of Amherst, Massachusetts in 1958. Thompson and Frost, both New Englanders, were good friends, and Frost was very happy with Thompson's interpretation of his poems. The Road Not Taken is...

one of seven poems Thompson chose to set to music for the Frostiana suite.
