2 Samuel 23:3-4.

Commissioned and premiered in 1949 by the Boston Symphony Orchestra to honor Dr. Serge Koussevitsky for 25 years of directorship. Roaring ascending scales in the accompaniment reflect the great strength of this Old Testament text. The popularity of this anthem is surpassed only by Thompson's Alleluia..

Western Canada High School Concert Choir, under David Ferguson- late 1970s. I was a typical teenage boy, yet singing this with our 60-70 voice choir was one of the most electrifying events of my high school years, and rarely matched since. Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps. I...

'm hoping to join a heavenly choir one day to perform this again... :)

I performed this with my college choir, along with 3 other choirs for our Governor's inauguration, and have performed it in my church choir as well. It is an incredibly powerful and moving piece that goes from a strong powerful, comanding begining to an almost heavenly shimmering middle section...

. It astounds with it's beauty. I never get tired of it!

  • February 17, 2003 Great Performance Opener

I was recently in the CMEA Capitol Section High School Honor Choir (Under the direction of Dr. Joshua Haberman) which was composed of aprox. 200 students. We performed The Last Words of David as our opening peice. When we were done... All I could think was WOW!!!! That sounded really...

good! And our audience (wich was counted at over 2,000 people) all looked at us with pure amazement. If I were asked to describe The Last Words of David in one or two words it would be; Majestic, yet, Beautiful. If you are concidering buying this peice of music, I highly sugest you do! You will be happy you did! I know our choir was!
