  • June 20, 2020 Another waste

While the song list is attractive, the arrangements are not. There's no development to speak of. Most pieces are only 3 pages long, maybe 4; some are only 2 pages. Example: "God The Omnipotent!" is a strong, majestic hymn, but the Keveren arrangement is quiet and mousy. It has...

a loud part, but the end is totally anticlimactic. Most people could probably do better just by improvising from a hymnal. The difficulty is mostly beginner with a few only leaning toward "intermediate beginner". The printing (page layout) is so widely spaced (vertically and horizontally) that it's difficult to read. Maybe that's how they make a 2-page piece of nothing into 4 pages? There's no challenge to these pieces, and no reward playing them. I'm sorry I bought this. Save your $$$. After buying several titles from Sheetmusic.com, I've come to the conclusion that the samples on the site (printed, audio, or "watch") are not sufficiently representative of the actual music. I'll probably quit buying here.

  • August 08, 2011 Beautiful, simple arrangements

This book is a beautiful collection of a wide range of hymns. For a player wishing for simple and attainable arrangements of hymns yet sound more complex to the listener, this book is a lovely choice!

  • November 14, 2008 The shading is everything

Although many of the hymns were simple to play, the shading added much to the presentation of the music. I played "Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing" as an introit, and received many, many compliments on this arrangement (including an email from our pastor!). I've played several others during...

the musical prelude portion of our services, which were very comforting and put our congregation in a worshipful mood.

  • May 22, 2008 Nice traditional hymns

These hymn solos are short and easy to learn or sight-read. I'm a big fan of Philip Keveren's arrangements. I like that he has included a broad selection of traditional hymn tunes in this collection.

  • July 05, 2007 Pretty but very simple

Of all the Phillip Keveren Series books I have purchased, this one is my least favorite. While I like the song selections (traditional hymns), most are a little too simple for my taste. Still, the arrangements are pretty, but not too interesting. Keveren's new book "Hymn Medleys" is a...

much better choice. Arrangements are longer and a little more challenging. Either book is a good choice for the busy church pianist with little time to prepare specials or offertories.
