  • January 25, 2022 Redundant accidental signs a turnoff

In customary music notation, accidentals automatically cancel at the bar line. Natural signs are only used within the SAME measure if needed to cancel an accidental therein. Natural signs and other accidentals are NOT needed in the next measure for a note that has been affected in the previous measure...

, as it is commonly understood that the note has returned to its key signature state. The few sample pages for this book already show multiple instances of these unnecessary accidentals being used, strangely sometimes even for a different octave than the accidental in the previous measure. This is confusing and has me searching back to see why the signs are there in the first place! It would help to ignore them if they were indicated as "courtesy accidentals" in parentheses, but they're not. This breaking of notational rules is a deciding factor in my not buying this book.

  • March 06, 2019 Good choices, but...

I like the book. There is a good variety of genre in there and it's not too easy nor too hard. What I don't like is that the arranger's name isn't included, so I can't relate back to syllabuses to see if any pieces are...

included in exam lists for my students.
