  • June 19, 2009 Very Good!

I bought this book in the early nineties when in school and it greatly improved my piano repertoire as well as my general understanding as to music. It's a little interesting in that although it's considered note-for-note, it's not identical to some of David Pearl...

's transcriptions of the same material in his Steely Dan: Just the Riffs for Piano book (specifically insofar as the Do It Again solo and the Reeling in the Years verse riff patterns) or to what one may actually see Donald Fagen playing live on YouTube in the early seventies, but it's SO much more accurate than most published sheet music and as such, demystifies some of the magic herein. I recommend this book for many reasons. It's very close to the actual recorded tracks which I prefer, but if you're looking for music that would cover more of the bases (as played by one instrument), it's a bit too literal.

I bought this book to learn some bass lines and maybe play it with a band. Everything is accurate and correct, all good songs. I was hoping that it would have each part separately, instead each part has one line on each page, so one song with all the parts...

is 14 pages long sometimes. Also, it doesn't always give the specific horn instruments, just horn reduction (like for My Old School), but does put in the lyricon part for Peg and tenor sax part for Aja. Overall I like this sheet music and find it handy and helpful to have, there just could be some improvements.
