I was a big fan of Horace in the early sixties and learnt his tunes by ear. I still play them. This is a nicely produced book which should be read by all aspiring jazz musicians. It is a treasure and speaks the truth!

This publication did not meet my expectations. I had expected more theory on harmonizing lines and integrating the rhythm section and front line. Instead, the book contains a lot about the "touchy-feely" side of music making - I guess it fulfills its title of "The ART of Small Combo Jazz...

" (not the THEORY). However, the fully written out quintet arrangements of seven Silver tunes are very useful and repay detailed study.
