The Angel Gabriel from Heaven Came

By Thomas A. Ohnesorge

SATB choir, organ - Early Intermediate
Composed by Thomas A. Ohnesorge and Paul Manz (1919-2009). Arranged by T. A. Ohnesorge. Year A Advent3; Year A Advent4. Christmas, Advent, 20th Century. Octavo. MorningStar Music Publishers #50-0058. Published by MorningStar Music Publishers (MN.50-0058).

Item Number: MN.50-0058

Scripture: Luke 1.

Based on Paul Manz's organ setting of the tune GABRIEL'S MESSAGE, this is an approachable setting for SATB choir. The women (briefly) divide into three parts. Rhythmic drive is present throughout, yet does not disrupt the historic dignity of this ancient Basque Carol.

  • December 05, 2011 Straightforward, effective arrangement

My choir's just performed this as part of an Advent carol service, and it's an effective arrangement of the classic carol. It's straightforward for the choir, particularly if they're used to the Edgar Pettman harmonies, as it's generally in unison for them or uses those...

harmonies. However, the altos divide for a short unaccompanied SAA section, so they need to be strong enough for that, and the organ registration requires good strings or flute celestes to be really effective. And beware that a few of the words are different from some other arrangements! I'd recommend this as a relatively simple addition to any service for Advent, Christmas or the Feast of the Annunciation.
