At times the music of Shostakovich’s eighth is almost too much to bear, such is the shockingly brutal intensity of the music. The climax in the powerful first movement is frankly, disturbing and deeply distressing. The second movement scherzo is grotesque satire on a large scale and drives along...

with devilish ferocity. The third movement would seem to suggest the mechanical war machine, wide octave leaps and the mechanical rhythm give a “dehumanised quality to the music. The trio section that follows is again deeply satirical; the bombast is quite intentional. The climax that leads up to the fourth movement has always deeply moved me, the only way I can describe it is to say that it is like the end of the world. The pasacaglia that follows is dark and brooding. The final movement starts out innocently enough but eventually we here the barbaric climaxes of the first movement return. The symphony ends quietly but with sinister undertones of the past haunting the apparent peace.
