  • December 18, 2007 Good introduction!

Play Klezmer! is an economical introduction to a wonderful and exciting style of clarinet playing. An advanced student with any prior background in klezmer will be frustrated by the modest tempos of the "fast" tunes, but this book and CD are perfect for younger players. Were I a teacher, I...

would want students also to listen to a fully instrumented klezmer band to get a real sense of this art form. (The CD that comes with the book has largely synthesized accompaniments.) However, that is probably too picky a comment for youngsters who will be most likely to benefit from Play Klezmer! It is a great deal for the price, and was a big hit at our synagogue's Hannukah party. I highly recommend Play Klezmer!

This is a really good compilation of Klezmer music which is fun and easy to play. It is not difficult, and it sounds really good with the cd accompanyment. Although I had not heard of most of the songs, they have that authentic Klezmer sound. I highly recommend it.
