    Difficulty Level:

In 3 movements, very classical stylistic traits throughout. Copland makes use of very sparse musical materials (few notes, select rhythms) and relies on rhythmic and registral manipulations for variety. The home "key" of b-flat minor in the first movement is projected in very clever, but non-traditional ways, with...

discordance used as only Copland's genius could. The 2nd movement is a delightful "birding song" of sorts that makes much of irregular and constantly shifting (i.e. 5/8, 7/8, 6/8) rhythmic patterns and extreme registers of the piano. The 3rd movement, a ponderous, weighty elegy begins with poignant dissonance, and dissolves into a long protracted largo, bringing back materials from the previous 2 movements rounding out the Sonata as a whole. I love this composition, but took off one star because the print appears to be a photo-reduced production, and is smeary and hard-to-read in places. You really have to quint at times. But the price is right! Buy it anyway, and enjoy.
