  • August 28, 2009 Wonderful words and music

There are many inspiring Irish blessings and this is certainly one of the best. It has been set to music by dozens of composers, but Mr Agay's arrangement has literally moved many people to tears - read the reviews on YouTube. His arrangement is simple, but well crafted, and very...

flexible - it can be played as a piano solo, or vocal/piano solo, or full SATB/piano performance, without compromising its musicality. It is suitable for grades 7-up, but also for adult choirs. I keep spare copies to give to other musicians.

  • June 19, 2007 "Old Irish Blessing" was truly a blessing

A parishioner came up to me one Sunday after Mass and asked if I would be willing to have my choir sing this piece on the 7th anniversary of her husband's passing. The song had meant much to this couple while the husband was alive, but in her grief...

the widow had forgotten to request it for his funeral, and desperately needed some closure. We had only two very busy rehearsals to learn it, and were forced to end it at the cadence halfway through. Nevertheless, it was beautiful, and we eagerly intend to learn the rest of it and use it for memorials and special farewells in the future. This widow and many others were moved to tears by the music. The phrasing and harmonies are luscious and sound rich in 4-part choral harmony. This arrangement has been around for some time and is still very stirring and profound.
