  • April 24, 2008 Incredibly Fun

This group of pieces are incredible. I haven't played too many ensembles in my few years of playing the sax, but of them all, and all I've heard, this is by far the best. For our Solo and Ensemble, my quartet played The Lioness and Hornist's Nest...

(2nd & 3rd Mvts) and we all love it. The 1st alto leads all the music throughout, but the other 3 parts are all very fun and at least as challenging as it. Sometimes subtle, the 3 other parts have crucial parts in the music, and are given solos and solis all throughout. The tenor and bari especially in the Hornist's Nest have great parts, tenor with some awesome solos and bari with a really cool bass line and a lot of little solos. No one part will ever feel left out, even when they never really get the main melody. All 4 movements are very fun to play. The 2nd is very nice and sweet, and the 3rd is really loud and fun (we take it way over tempo). I would definitely recommend this to any sax quartet looking for some good music.
