When Liszt took over the direction of the Court Opera in Weimar, he spent a great deal of time exploring Goethe's works. He was particularly attracted to the subject-matter of Faust. He used Nikolaus Lenau's “Faust,” a comprehensive poem in 24 scenes, as the model for his orchestral work in two parts “Episodes from Lenau's Faust.” The second part, “Dance in the Village Inn,” was originally written for piano solo. He gave this wild piece which builds up to an almost delirious climax the title “Mephisto Waltz.” The piano composition soon spread around the world in its own right and even today is considered to be the quintessential bravura piece. For the first time, a version of the piece that was abridged and simplified by Liszt can be found in the appendix.

I'm currently a 14 year old freshman student who has been playing the piano for 11 years (starting to get college performance credits next year). I am also a teacher. I was interested in this work after watching Tiffany Poon's performance of this piece and saw this Henle...

Urtext edition. This edition provides history of the piece, ossia variants, and of course, the appendix at the end. This edition also is printed quite nicely. The only problem with it is that it has a lot of pages and is hard to stay open, but that could easily be fixed by opening it a lot. If you were interested in learning this piece, I'd recommend this edition. Be warned though, it has a bunch of octave skips and big reaches that take a lot of practice to master. Definitely not for a beginner. If you wanted to learn this piece, again, get this one! It has the usual high quality of a Henle edition.

This is easily one of Franz Liszt most popular pieces for solo piano. In fact every serious pianist should include this piece in their repertory. It's extremely fun to play, exciting for the listener and it's a technical monster! This piece incorporates nearly every piano technique imaginable. Fast...

leaps/jumps, note repetition, arpeggios that span the width of the keyboard, glissandos and fast paced octaves. But despite the difficulties Liszt presents the pianist, it is well worth the energy spent to learn this piece. This is not a piece for a beginner. The Henle Edition as usual is excellent. Excellent print quality, large readable notes, a good forward explaining the origins and history of the piece and a very well put together appendix. I highly recommend this edition.
