The book of sheet music is very well-bound, and should last a long time of proper use. The scores are clearly printed, and everything is easy on the eyes. There is an introductory biography of the composer included (one would wish a photo or even an artist's sketch...

of the composer as well). The music is one of my favourites.

  • November 05, 2019 Delightful Book of Kuhlau Sonatinas

I enjoy very much playing sonatinas. They tell a story. They also generally have much variety regarding technique, style, expression, mood and sometimes, form. Over the years, I had learned one or two Kuhlau sonatinas. This book now gives me the opportunity to expand upon that repertoire. If an aspiring...

pianist wishes to avoid study books for improving pianistic technique, then turning to a book such as the Kuhlau sonatinas is a wonderful alternative. Technique is marvelously embedded in the music. I also took the time to research a bit about this composer and I highly recommend that aspiring pianists do such research as a matter of course at all times.

I have gotten so much use out of this book! It really gets you working on your scales in context. It is a great stepping stone on the way to playing classical sonatas and more difficult works. The pieces are wonderful to listen as well! They would be welcome in...

    a student recital setting.

I have really been enjoying these pieces. I have never played Kuhlau before and I am glad to have music like this that I can more or less play through on first sight, but which also presents value both musically and in developing or maintaining technique.

  • January 07, 2009 Great music, terrible copy

Kuhlau's music is not on judgment here; what is seriously wrong with this collection is entirely attributable to Schirmer. They have done a terrible publishing job. The op. 55#3 is found in Jane Bastien's 'Piano Literature' vol 3 and is printed there in a readable format. Schirmer...

cheaped out and scrunched too many bars on each page. Often times there 6 or 7 bars on a line-for music of this complexity that makes reading it a horrible task. The Alfred publishing collection of many of these pieces is also a much better job. I've noticed some other publications from Schirmer also suffer from readability issues. I'm steering away from their publications in the future. Kuhlau's music is a wonderful way for the 3rd or 4th grade (in terms of difficulty, not school grade) piano student to learn the late classical, early Romantic style.
