    Difficulty Level:
  • April 17, 2009 A Challenging but Rewarding Piece

This piece defies classification; it is in many ways minimalistic, with the machine rhythms and neo-classical-style harmonies made popular by Shostakovich, but at the same time, gives subtle hints of the sweeping melodies of Russian nationalism or perhaps even romanticism. One might even say that the piece is...

expressionistic at times, with its highly ambiguous key center and wide melodic intervals. Don't buy this piece unless you've heard it and know what you're getting into! It is quite possibly the most difficult piece of music I've ever seen in it's combination of extreme technicality and broad lyricism. With that said, this piece is not unapproachable, and I feel the pay off is worth it. If you've mastered the Arutiunian or Pakhmutova, this (or possibly the Weinberg) is the next logical step. Enjoy it!
