I have used both the old yellow edition and this one. I find the fingering in this one inferior to the old edition, but I feel I have a better understanding of Bach's ornamentation with this edition. It has helped me a lot

I would not use this edition because of the fingering. It is impractical and cumbersome and not because of trying to be historically more in tune with the performance practice of the time.

My student had difficulty with the ornaments in Invention No. 1. The trills are shown as double trills and are in footnotes or above the staff notes. I switched my student to the traditional yellow cover Schirmer . My student did much better with the traditional yellow cover Schirmer book. The...

traditional book uses single trills and incorporates them into the staff. Also, I like the darker, larger print of the traditional yellow cover book.

  • December 14, 2009 Great Student Edition

I'm a big user of urtext editions, but often students just encountering the classics for the first time need an edition with helps for the ornaments and fingering. This volume does an outstanding job in that category! The music is highly reliable, coming from authentic sources. The editing is...

in keeping with the proper principles of baroque performance, and the CD gives the student an outstanding model to follow. Schirmer editions historically were not known for being reliable sources for music of the baroque period. This publication changes that reputation. It is perhaps the best student edition I've seen. Congratulations, Schirmer.

I purchased the J.S. Bach -- Two-Part Inventions from Schirmer Special Editions for a few reasons. First, the music is printed in very easy to read ink on a vellum like paper, not a flimsy fall-apart book, but one you can use for years to come. As well...

, I am always interested in interpretations of music by contemporary artists and the CD which came with the music provided just the right amount of inspiration to get me going. For the money, an excellent buy.
