The Intermezzo of 1917 occupies a special position in Kurt Weill's oeuvre, for it is the only piece he wrote for piano solo. This is all the more surprising in view of the fact that the composer himself studied as a pianist. Influences from Wagner, Brahms and the Romantic tradition of piano music are mingled in astonishing fashion with melodies and modulation techniques that are typical of Weill's early works. This Intermezzo is a real find for Weill fans, as the four-minute piece was only given its first performance in 1999 and is published here for the first time.

This is a very early work by Kurt Weill, possibly never performed in his lifetime. His unique melodic style can be heard here, and one can perceive his early German influences as well, especially Brahms. There are some technical difficulties later in the piece, and perhaps some notes and hand...

distributions will have to be altered. Highly recommended for Weill devotees and a must for music historians and theorists.
