Harold Darke and Gustav Holst (alongside many others) have placed the bar high with their settings of Christina Rossetti's dearly-loved Christmastide poem. Woodside's past experience, working with trebles in his posts at Westminster Abbey and Wells Cathedral, has clearly informed his writing. This piece would be a welcome addition to any primary school Christmas celebration.

Jeremy’s composition ‘In the bleak midwinter’ is perfectly suited to the Christchurch Boys’ Choir that I direct. The music is extremely approachable both for the singers and listeners alike, yet still provides appropriate challenges for the choir including breaking into three voice parts at one point. The glorious cello...

part adds a rich additional dimension which, along with the piano, creates a quietly luscious accompaniment. The overall effect is a piece which really is a gem of a work that stands alone and tugs at ones heart strings. This most beautiful text is complemented by a musical setting that encapsulates the emotive nature of Rosetti’s famous words.
