The inspiring sounds of 10 best-loved hymns are yours for the playing in James Curnow's GREAT HYMNS books with CD accompaniment. The included CD allows a soloist to be more fully prepared for performance than was sometimes possible in the past. Perhaps you've been in the situation where the soloist and the accompanist have almost no time to rehearse together. They may have to do their only combined rehearsal shortly before the worship service begins. Until the advent of play-along CDs, soloists sometimes didn't even have a rough idea of what the accompaniment would sound like until it was almost time to go on stage. Judicious use of the play-along CD can help to solve problems caused by today's busy schedules, even if you don't actually use the CD in the performance. Occasionally though, a qualified accompanist is just not available. The high fidelity CD recording means that the music can still go on, whether you have an accompanist up to the task or not. These sacred hymns are an important part of our rich cultural heritage and, as such, are appropriate for almost any venue. Every church and school will find GREAT HYMNS to be a valuable and enduring asset.

  • February 15, 2014 Trumpet? Yes, Flute? No

This collection was created for the trumpet. It is filled with flourishes and bravado that are not appropriate for the flute. These hymns are presented in a show off manner that did not appeal to me, nor to my idea of worship music.

  • June 03, 2011 Great Hymns ( Flute/Oboe)

Just purchased this book and I am very pleased with the contents. I am especially happy with the CD that comes with it. The music is upbeat and modern and will appeal to most age groups.

  • March 22, 2011 Great for piccolo

I have used 2-3 pieces from this collection for playing at weddings (worked well). More recently, I became more serious about playing piccolo, and found that almost all of the pieces from this book work very well on the piccolo (especially the ones that some have said sounded more...

appropriate for brass). If you want the piano accompaniment for live performances, it is available in a separate book (035900).

  • August 03, 2009 No accompaniment score

I was expecting an accompaniment score along with the CD. Alas, only the flute score arrived. Also, the score has too many rest measures where the soloist would just be standing there in front of the congregation while the CD plays. I couldn't find too many songs appropriate for...

a church solo w/out a pianist. Not worth the $.

  • April 03, 2009 Unusual arrangements

The arrangements seem more suitable for horns than for strings.
