Choral (SATB)
Composed by Robert Ray. Choral. Festival. Octavo. 56 pages. Hal Leonard #51705. Published by Hal Leonard (HL.44707014).

Item Number: HL.44707014

8.5x11.0x0.146 inches.

For centuries, the world's great composers have set the Ordinary of the Mass in a wide variety of styles. Ray has surrounded these texts with the joyous styles of contemporary African-American music. All six movements work well as individual anthems, but collectively they form a truly powerful performance experience. Available separately: SATB, ShowTrax CD (w/Rhythm Section) and Score/Parts for Full Orchestra.

Robert Ray's song "He Never Failed Me Yet" is one of the best contemporary Gospel songs around. I was excited to see his Gospel Mass. While must of it is excellent, it is not always his best work. Certain moments stand out, particularly the Credo, which I feel can...

stand alone as an excellent piece. The vocal writing varies from easy/intermediate to intermediate. The harmnonic language includes a lot of 7th chords and is a little more complex (and interesting) than much Gospel music. There are ample opportunities for strong soloists to be featured. My concern with performing the entire work would be its somewhat repetitive character.

The Gospel Mass is not difficult to learn, assuming the choir has some basic grasp of syncopation. The trick is to have a rhythm section (piano-bass-drums) that has a solid understanding of the gospel style.

When my choir director put this into our hands (I'm a tenor), I thought there is no way we can do this; we're "just" a church choir. I was wrong! The music is absolutely the most encouraging work, and I sorely needed it. Get it. Buy it. In...

our choir, there's a teenager up to folks in their 60's. All loved it.
