Considered as one of the masterworks of 20th century piano literature, this critical edition utilizes interpretive clues from such noted French pianists and pedagogues as Casadesus, Perlemuter, and Ciampi, who knew Ravel and studied this piece with him. The original Durand score has not been altered, but editorial changes are pointed out as they occur by means of footnotes. Through her expertise in the French piano literature Nancy Bricard has contributed her own ideas in regard to fingering and metronome markings.

Without a doubt the best edition around of this masterwork. Thoroughly detailed. For people like me who only use scores when learning a piece and not when performing it, this edition is perfect. There are helpful tips at the bottom of the pages, such as alternate fingerings and advice on...

practicing the difficult passages. Bricard is accomplished and writes a thorough preface.

  • June 02, 2006 Good study copy

This publication has the smallest type I've ever seen. I hesitate to recommend it, though it would make a good study copy. The Schirmer publication is superior to Alfred's, and Schirmer's editor has included recommended fingering.

  • April 24, 2006 Excellent resource for serious pianists

This is easily the best edition I have encountered of this work. Of particular interest are the suggested fingerings of some of the difficult passages (e.g., quick staccato chords and tricky figurations in Scarbo, etc.), especially given that they consider producing the right *sounds* in addition to improving facility...

. However, the largest value of this edition is the scholarship behind it, especially in the corrections of the large number of errors present in the Durand edition.

  • November 20, 2003 taxing, virtuosic beauty

VERY physically taxing works. excellent edition to study - however, it is difficult to read when playing at proper tempi on account of excess information on the page. this edition is wonderful for musicological purposes - not as much so for performance.
