Grainger (1882-1961) was an inveterate arranger of music 'for practical music-making', as stated in this edition in the English Gothic Music Series jointly edited with Dom Anselm Hughes. . For Angelus ad Virginem (an Annunciation hymn from c.1200) there are six known versions (ref. Barry Peter Ould, Percy Grainger Society). Angelus ad Virginem is a seven-verse hymn with original Latin and Middle-English texts and a Modern English translation was added, all three given as underlay. The melody is strikingly attractive in a dance-like 6/8 rhythm. The two-part and three-part harmonies are taken from contemporary manuscripts. The mixed voice version heightens the dialogue between the Angel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary. There are many arrangements and editions of this hymn. Grainger's remains an attractive option.
