Before entering college for opera performance, I was in chorus for 10 years. I performed this song with the 2004 Florida All-State high school women's choir. Because of this song, I finally learned to love singing in German. It is absolutely beautiful. Though it's in 6/8...

time, it sounds like a cross between a waltz and a lullaby. (Of course, our conductor told us not to sing it like a waltz, as it's not written in 3, but the song is still very elegant and had a waltz-like quality to it.) The piano part is lovely (and not overly-difficult), as are the harmonies between soprano and alto. The modulation from minor to major and then back to minor at the end is a very nice touch. Brahms knew his stuff, and his brilliance shines through in this simple yet gorgeous piece.
