  • January 21, 2009 Excellent!

I am a music major and I thought that this piece is a very fun one for a clarinet player, especially the second and fourth movement. I was able to learn many things about instrumental expression by playing this piece, such as things you can do to make a passage...

interesting even if you have heard those particular measures earlier in the piece. The first movement is good for working on expression and is slow and lyrical. The second movement is more lively. The third movement is written in a style that is undeniably baroque with many embellishments taking place and many thirty-second notes. The fourth movement is lively and it sounds bouncy. This piece is great for working on expression and rhythmic accuracy, and it is an outstanding piece to play.

  • September 12, 2007 A piece everyone should do

A good old favourite, shows off the versatility of the clarinet; the range, dynamic contrast. A good piece to work on intonation in the throat register.

  • March 15, 2007 A violin sonata adapted for clarinet

The tonal qualities of the clarinet work very well with the composition. Wide range - 3 octaves (plus a half-tone) An intermediate player might be challenged by some of the altissimo phrases, or playing up to tempo. Piano redaction is nicely done. Criticisms (rather minor): Tempi are grave, allegro molto...

, adagio, and allegro risoluto; some players would appreciate suggestions of metronome settings. The clarinetist's score has rests occurring both times a page needs to be turned. For the pianist: had the music been printed such that the score began on the left-hand page instead of the right, a double bar (or a right hand only passage once) would occur at every page turn. As it is printed, the accompianist must turn the page in the midst of the more complex passages FIVE of the seven times; what a shame when this could have been so easily remedied. Other than these few annoyances, I heartily recommend this work.
