Item Number: S0.799765

Classical Guitar Technique is a revolutionary new method book, specifically designed for students to teach themselves how to play classical guitar. The author, noted classical guitarist and teacher Ramon Amira, has designed an extremely user-friendly step-by-step method that guides a student through all phases of basic classical guitar technique, using detailed and easy to understand language that simulates the way he gives instruction to his students in person.

No prior knowledge of guitar or music is necessary, as the method starts with the beginner basics and proceeds in a carefully planned progression from beginner to intermediate player. All instruction is accompanied by large photos to illustrate the various positions and techniques.

The book includes a generous number of pieces by famous composers for classical guitar: Sor, Giuliani, Carulli, Purcell, Sanz, Aguado. Detailed Study Notes for all pieces are on a left hand page facing the music on a right hand page, so the student can easily refer to the Study Notes as he or she is learning a new piece. All titled pieces have been recorded and can be heard online. All music is written in standard notation, so a student learns both technique and how to read music at the same time. The book is designed to bring a student to an intermediate playing level.

Ramon Amira started playing the guitar at the age of fifteen, then studied classical guitar with Juan de la Mata, and flamenco guitar and dance accompaniment with the great virtuoso Mario Escudero. He continued his classical and flamenco guitar studies in Los Angeles with Vicente Gomez. While living in Los Angeles he was the classical and flamenco guitar critic for the Los Angeles Times, and the flamenco guitar and dance critic for the L.A. Herald-Examiner, and has reviewed Andres Segovia, John Williams, Julian Bream, Christopher Parkening, Pepe Romero, Carlos Montoya, Sabicas, Manitas de Plata, and many others. He has given numerous classical and flamenco guitar recitals and lecture demonstrations. He currently performs in the New York area as a classical and flamenco guitarist, and is a prominent teacher of guitar.

As the title states, this is a book for a beginning guitarist to learn from without having access to a teacher. There are other books out there with well known names and methods. In this book though, the author lays out the fundamentals and explains them in a thoughtful and...

thorough manner. For the first time it seemed as if a teacher was speaking directly to me. The inclusion of tips and study notes aids in comprehension and guiding the student in common areas that many guitarists struggle. As in practice, slow and steady wins the race. The author packs a lot of information in every sentence and it pays off to slowly read and comprehend what they are trying to teach. Overall a very well written book. The topics are covered comprehensively with a natural progression that is better than any other course that I have tried. Highly recommend this to anyone interested in learning classical guitar!

  • July 10, 2020 Great book

This is the third classical guitar method book I have tried, and I have learned more from this one and in less time. The difference is that the author goes into great detail with his instructions, and it makes a big difference when you don’t have a teacher, which...

is why I buy method books in the first place. A good example is his instructions for executing a rest stroke, an important part of basic technique. The others explain it in a few sentences. Here the author gives three pages of instruction, with numbered steps, photos, exercises, and a summary and checklist for doing the stroke properly. There are Study Notes for just about everything, which I have found extremely helpful, and he gives them for both the techniques to be learned and for the pieces of music. What I like about that is that I never find myself wondering if I’m doing something wrong, Overall it is just so well organized and clear that it makes it easy to teach yourself.

  • July 03, 2020 Outstanding method. Completely different.

I started reading and it was like a teacher was sitting next to me, telling me exactly what to do and exactly how to do it, with numbered instructions enclosed in a box - “1) Do this. 2) Do this. 3) Now do this.” The instructions are detailed and accompanied by...

photos. All music is in standard notation, so you learn how to read music. It does not presuppose any knowledge of music, or of playing a guitar. It is arranged in sections. 1) Preparation – telling you everything you need to get started. 2) Basic Guitar Technique – a long comprehensive section detailing the various techniques. 3) Classical Guitar Music – a group of excellent classical guitar pieces that are at just the right level. A very helpful feature is detailed study notes for all pieces. Recordings of all pieces are online. A welcome bonus is a whole section on chords, which is not often found in method books. This is a different and well thought out method. I recommend it for everyone!
