I am a violin teacher, and I find this book is really wonderful for older and adult beginners. I use it in conjunction with Suzuki, which I feel sometimes lacks in specific technique instruction. Applebaum offers a good focus on different skill builders, but in a more friendly style than...

etudes such as Wohlfahrt. The extensive explanations at the beginning of each technique are also good for the more mature beginner. The short length of each song also is a good morale booster, since the length of time it takes to tackle Suzuki songs can also be discouraging for students just exiting their method books. I have used this book successfully with middle school age through adult students.

  • December 11, 2004 This book is SO much fun!

I have played violin for 4 years, have had 3 teachers, and am currently self-taught. (I also am an experienced musician and piano teacher, who knows a good music book when I find one.) This is one of my favorite violin books. A nice collection of Classical works, and...

various folk styles, all of which are short, but complete, it's just extremely enjoyable to play. Some familiar tunes: Red River Valley, Clementine, The Irish Washwoman, Alouette, and Turkey in the Straw. Every tune is great, 52 in all. I would highly recommend this book for the early intermediate or intermediate violinist. It is WELL worth $6.95.
