Sir Henry Neville [was] Elizabeth I's ambassador to France. I have enjoyed reading many books on Shakespeare authorship for a long time but have never found any candidate so convincing as Neville, whose life fits perfectly with the progression of Shakespeare's works. I wanted to write something that expressed my feelings about this and I wrote Billingbear, a solo for Cor Anglais, commissioned by Christine Pendrill. Billingbear was the name of Neville's Berkshire home, which was burnt to the ground in the 1920's. In the same way that I enjoy old maps, I thought it would be haunting to imagine exploring the house that is no longer there, and all the secrets it holds. (Judith Bingham)
