The Piano Sonata op. 101 marks the transition to Beethoven's late works. The composer's increasing deafness was already manifesting itself in such a marked way that he no longer dared to appear publicly as a pianist. In this sonata he experimented with unusual harmonies, broke with form, gave detailed German headings for the movements, and for the first time also used a note so unheard of that it was not even on most of the contemporary pianos: the low counter E. The editors have undertaken a thorough revision of our edition and our catalogue now offers a single edition of this sonata.

This is a fabulous work! A lot of music today has little variance in rhythm & a lack of tonal significance. This piece takes care of both those issues while drawing you into wonderfully timed crescendos mixed with highly dissonant tones. Then there are the relaxed, spiritual sections to carry through...

as a wellrounded song. As a musician for life, pianist for 4 years, this one is tough to pull off. It is an excellent teaching tool. Sometimes there is a flurry of scales, then it breaks to a sweet rhythm. Superior finger length and control are needed to make this one sound good, otherwise Beethoven's style of dissonence is lost to limited chord structure and unhappy ears. I enjoy playing other piano solos like Mozart's Sonata in C K.545, Scarlatti's Sonata in A L.94, Final Fantasy VII Piano Collections' Fighting, and Final Fantasy VII Piano Collections' Gold Saucer. I find that the loftier goals you set for pieces to learn, the better reward you get back in skills learned.
