The melodies which comprise this Suite illustrate the natural relationship among folk song subjects, melodies and structures. “Liza Jane” is the inspiration for this medley. Her antics can be found in a wide variety of sources, texts and melodies, and are claimed by many states. The formal structure of this version exhibits rhythmic and melodic motives which easily unite it both musically and historically with the other songs in the medley. Each of the songs lends itself to costuming, staging and/or authentic portrayal of the play-party games which traditionally accompany their renditions.

    Difficulty Level:
  • March 31, 2006 What an exquisite medley

This is a wonderful piece which starts with "Going Down to Cairo" and gets even better as it goes along. In the hands of an expert group like Alexandria Choral Society's Children's Chorus, it becomes one of those tunes that one can't get out of one's...

head, but in a good way. It will be performed April 29, 2006 as part of the Appalachia-themed Spring Concert of ACS-CC in Alexandria, Virginia.
