  • March 05, 2009 Most helpful volume of Willan for Lutheran organists

As a Lutheran church organist, I had collected several volumes of Willan's hymn-based organ works before I came to this one. Some of the other volumes were practically useless to me, containing few if any tunes used in my church. This book yielded surprisingly profitable contents, especially for...

the Lenten season, with 4-5 numbers that I could immediately put into use. As always, the pieces are attractive, with traditional harmony, usually scored for 2 manuals and pedal and the hymn tune soloed out. A general criticism of Willan's work is that he tends toward long-winded cadences. Every piece follows a similar format, with the hymn tune coming early in the piece and the last 1/3 to 1/2 consisting of an excruciatingly stretched-out final cadence.
