First Suite in E-flat by Gustav Holst is widely consideredone of the masterworks of band literature and it is one of the earliest pieceswritten for wind ensemble. Completed in 1909, the suite did not premiere until11 years in 1920. Each of the threemovements Chaconne, Intermezzo, and March is based on the same phrase, seen at the beginning of each movement. The Chaconne begins with a ground bass stating the theme andfollows with a set of 15 variations over it. The Intermezzo is brisk, making use of the agility of thewinds. Last, the March is morelighthearted but then becomes more regal like a typical British march.
Instrumentation includes 1 piccolo, 4 flutes, 1 alto flute, and 1 bass flute. Parts may be doubled with more players if desired.
