There are so many different settings of this text of which some belong in my view to the most beautiful works of music for choir, and to write one more attempt to set this prayer, the Ave Maria, into music is only then interesting to me personally when the process of praying in church is captured in the musical language. When I think about this text, I envision people who are deep in thoughts, in silence, or whispering their own prayer. Thus, the prayers of individual members of a congregation in church have been a focus for my compositional idea for this piece, in which each singer whispers parts of the text individually.
Some careful thought has gone into the accessibility of this work for a wider range of performers. The majority of this work is non-divisi and the conventional part writing is rhythmically simple. Only in one section (the hour of death) the Soprano and Tenor parts split into two. With regards to the accessibility and teaching of harmonic language, there deliberately only two main ideas used as foundations for this work’s harmonic progressions: ascending semitone shifts which are executed by the individual parts individually, as well as chord progressions based on tritone substitution. The tritone is also an important feature in the climax section ‘hora mortis’.
