The driving keyboard accompaniment andA syncopated rhythms combine to make this accessible contemporary gospel work for the emerging treble ensemble a gospel powerhouse! It is a great opportunity to explore the genre that has greatly affected American music. Also available for Three-Part Mixed Voices (BL360).
Gospel music sprang from the religious experiences of twentieth-century African-Americans. As a style of singing, as well as a group of songs drawing on spirituals, hymns and original compositions, it is highly emotionally charged music. Gospel uses all kinds of instruments, especially keyboard and percussion, in the accompaniment to enhance the musical experience. Soloists are expected to improvise. The use of clapping and swaying is a common practice in gospel performances, as the body should not expect to stand still. Lon Beery has given us a choral work in the contemporary gospel style for the emerging treble choir. The tempo is bright and upbeat. Well-placed scoops are appropriate, at the discretion of the director. Beginning in m. 49, hand claps to the end would put a final touch of authenticity to the style. Above all, enjoy the driving rhythms and colorful harmonies and have a good time with your approach to singing this uplifting text!
