Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring is the usual title in English ofthe last movement of J S Bach’sCantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. Originally scored for choir, trumpet, violin and basso continuo, it was written in 1723 for the church of StThomas in Leipzig where Bach wasemployed.
This version is scored for Clarinet Quintet, four Bb Clarinetsand one Bass Clarinet. There is an alternative part 4 included for AltoClarinet in Eb. The score and all parts are combined in one pdf file.
Musicians at an intermediate level and above willfind this ideal for formal and informal performances. The famous melody in 9/8 alternateswith the slow 4-part chorale sections. All players will enjoy experiencing therich texture of Bach’s harmony. Theoverall performance time is around three minutes if played at the faster tempothat Bach preferred.
Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to introduce9/8 rhythms. There are few rests and long lines, so breathing will requireplanning.
