Benjamin Britten was a composer, conductor, pianist and central figure in 20th century British classical music. He showed musical talent at an early age and studied at the Royal College of Music in London. In 1945, he gained international fame for his opera Peter Grimes. He wrote 14 more operas during his career, earning him the distinction as a leading 20th century composer in that genre. Britten composed in a wide variety of genres including orchestral, choral, solo vocal, chamber and instrumental works, as well as film music. He often composed with particular performers in mind, most notably his life partner, the tenor Peter Pears. In addition to Peter Grimes, his best-known works include the War Requiem and The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.
